Cyber Security Month Event Empowers Consumers to Safeguard Against Increasingly Professional, Organized Cyber Attacks

WHAT: An expert panel will address the Congressional Internet Caucus, press and other key government officials during a workshop event entitled, Computer Security: What Your Constituents Need to Know. The experts will assess the current state of Cyber Security, focusing on the efforts individual computer users can take to protect their privacy and safety online. As the economic incentives rise for cyber crooks, computers in individual homes and small businesses are increasingly becoming the targets of attack. This event is hosted jointly by the Federal Trade Commission, the National Cyber Security Alliance, and the Congressional Internet Caucus Advisory Committee, in conjunction with the Internet Caucus and its Co-Chairs, Senators Burns and Leahy, and Congressmen Goodlatte and Boucher.

WHO: FTC Commissioner Orson Swindle will keynote the event. Other experts, representing the private sector and government, will be on hand to discuss important issues, assess emerging threats, and offer solutions in the realm of cyber security. They include: Susan Koehler, Security Mobilization, Microsoft Corporation; Martha Lockwood, Executive Director, National Cyber Security Alliance; Wendy Tazelaar, Compliance Manager, WellsFargo.com.

WHEN: Friday, October 22, 2004, 12:30 to 2:00 p.m. Lunch will be served.

WHERE: Room HC-5 of the U.S. Capitol Building.
