The Role of Government and Industry in Ensuring Individual Privacy on the Internet
No other issue has garnered as much attention this year in the Internet industry as privacy on the Internet. The Department of Commerce Privacy Event in June, the formation of the Online Privacy Alliance, the looming EU Data Directive, the Federal Trade Commission Web Sweeps, the series of pending legislative initiatives in both the House and Senate make this one of the most talked and decisive issues on the Internet.
According to several recent polls, privacy is the number one issue of concern for Internet users. Governments from Washington, D.C. to the European Union have begun to examine the role of government in this global medium and the Internet online industry continues to work towards effective solutions to online privacy concerns. Millions of Net users and the countless millions who have yet to log on will be effected by the decisions made in the coming months by government and industry. The Congressional Internet Caucus is pleased to present the following panel of experts to debate the current state of affairs and the next steps for government and industry. This panel is a balanced blend of industry reps, regulators, and children's and privacy advocates.
